I have been making these for years now. They are super easy to make if you have a work pot luck or Halloween gathering to go to. They are super easy to customize and can be any colour that you want – on top of being able to change the colour of the rice crispy treats as well by adding just a little bit of food colouring!
a few things about this recipe:
- Need a rice crispy treat recipe? Use mine here!
- Never used candy melts before? Find my tips for melting them here!
- Use chocolate chips (dark, milk, white or flavoured) if you don’t want to purchase candy melts.
what you need to make these zombie rice crispy treats:
- Rice Krispie cereal (regular or GF)
- Marshmallows
- Vanilla
- Butter
- Candy Melts or Chocolate to melt
- Parchment Paper
- Candy eyes
- Piping bag (optional)
Ally’s tips:
- Don’t over heat the candy melts. They turn into a crumbly mess when too hot and then they aren’t useable anymore.
- Make sure the rice crispy treats are fresh – they have a short shelf life so if you need to split up the activity,, try not to make them more than 24 hours in advance.
- You can dip the rice crispy treats in the melted candy or chocolate. I find it easier to use a small spatula and just spread the melted candy or chocolate on top
- Put some of your melted candy or chocolate into a piping bag (or ziploc bag) to make designs on your zombies. See below for mummy inspiration.
Storage
Store in an airtight container for up to three days.
steps to make zombie rice crispy treats:
- Make rice crispy Treats using my recipe here.
- Cut rice crispy into desired shapes. I use rectangles but they can be any size or shape you want.
- Prepare any candy eyeballs or sprinkles that you want to decorate with. It’s best to work quickly once you start decorating before the candy or chocolate starts to harden.
- On a sheet of parchment paper, line all of your Rice Krispie treats out ready to decorate.
- Melt candy melts or chocolate. For tips on working with candy melts, find my tips here.
- Decorate as desired – see below for inspiration.
- Let sit for 30-45 minutes for candy to harden. If you used chocolate you may want to let cool in the fridge but then be sure to let them come back to room temperature so that the Rice Krispie treats are not too hard to eat.
- Eat & enjoy!
