Need and easy gift for Valentine’s Day that doesn’t cost much but is hard not to love by all ? this is the perfect DIY for your Valentine !

Today on the blog, I’m using my recipe for chocolate chip cookies and showing you how to divide it up for two gifts or one big one that will be easy for Valentine’s Day. Make it with kids and decorate the jar with ribbon, stickers, etc and add a card with a few simple directions and you are good to go. This is an easy, simple idea is a perfect DIY for your valentine.

I included printable instructions below incase that’s more your style than writing it out.

What do we actually need to make these?

The thing is that because we are not making the cookies we can skip the butter, eggs and vanilla- these are things that the recipients will need. I picked a part the recipe for you and here’s what you need :

  • Flour
  • Baking Soda
  • White Sugar
  • Light Brown Sugar
  • Salt
  • Chocolate Chips
  • Valentines m&m’s/smarties/baking chips
  • Mason Jar
  • Ribbon, stickers, etc.

Use any favourite cookie recipe !

Just leave out any liquids and it will work

Here’s how to put them together:

follow along the images below incase you get stuck!

(Note that this is the full recipe in tall mason jar, double the size of a standard mason jar)

  1. Measure all your ingredients according to the recipe, we are going to add them backwards to the order that recipe calls for
  2. Grab your empty mason jar and add the flour, followed by the baking soda and salt.
  3. Add the chocolate chips and any ”themed” chips you are adding.
  4. Pack in the light brown sugar. I add the brown sugar before the white sugar to keep a barrier so the white sugar doesn’t all sink between the chocolate chips. All the ingredients are going to be a tight fit so pack them all in.
  5. Pour the white sugar in over top and close with the lid.
  6. Add ribbon and/or decorate any way you wish. Add card and instructions for how to bake the cookies. See below for those.
  7. Gift to your valentine!

Here’s what the recipient needs to know, it’s time to bake the cookies!

  1. Measure all ingredients and make sure they are all at room temp. Microwave butter for 20-30 seconds if needed and put eggs in a bowl of hot (from the tap, not boiling) if needed
  2. Add butter and sugars to mixer bowl and mix until well combined
  3. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing in between
  4. Add Vanilla
  5. Add chocolate chips to the flour and stir coating them in flour will keep them from sinking to the bottom of your cookies. Then add to butter, sugars, egg mixture wth baking soda and salt.
  6. Scoop using your desired scoop size onto an aluminum foil lined cookie sheet. A 1″ scoop will make approx. 30 cookies and a 2″ scoop will make approx. 14 cookies.
  7. Chill in fridge for minimum 1 hour. Desire amount of time is 4-12 hours.
  8. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  9. Once preheated, cook for the appropriate time based on your cookie size. For Larger cookies bake 12-14 minutes, for smaller cookies bake 9-11 minutes. The edges of the cookies will become slightly stiff and you will just see bits of golden on the cookies. You don’t want the bottoms to be dark as they will darken more while cooling.
  10. Cool on pan for 5 minutes before transferring to cooling rack to dry completely.
