Ever need sprinkles and not have any or can’t find the colours you want? OR have you ever had leftover royal icing and not know what to do with it? I got you covered! Keep reading to make your own homemade sprinkles!
Okay so here’s a few problems I encounter with sprinkles (more reasons to make your own homemade sprinkles):

The sets of themed ones can be expensive! ($5-$15+ CAD) is a lot for sprinkles when (especially if you don’t bake offten) you might not even need that many. Solution: go to the Bulk Barn or similar stores where you can buy smaller quantities HOWEVER your colour options are limited. This is how I ended up with a DIY for making your own sprinkles! You don’t need to go out and buy them and they can be ANY colour you want!

A few things about making your own homemade sprinkles:

  1. They will last for at least 6 months – 1 year.
  2. If you don’t have piping bags for the icing you can use a sandwich bag instead
  3. The color changes a bit as it dries so make it a darker than you want if you use the corn syrup method and a bit lighter if you want if you use my royal icing recipe.
  4. No piping tips? No prob bob. Just cut a small hole at the bottom of your piping bag or sandwich bag about the size you want your sprinkles!

Ally’s Tips:

  1. I usually use the Royal Icing method over the Corn Syrup method as I usually have leftover icing.
  2. Add in half of the icing sugar first, mix well and then add the rest of the icing sugar.
  3. If needed, add more water or icing sugar in small amounts. Final consistency should be thick but still a bit runny.
  4. If using piping tips,, determine the size you want your sprinkles to be. For the image above, the yellow sprinkles are with the #1 tip, the light blue are with the #2 tip, and the dark blue and white dots are both with a #3 tip.

Storage:

Store in an airtight container or sandwich bag for up to 1 year in cool place away from direct sunlight. I also may opt to add a piece of paper towel inside to help absorb the moisture to keep the homemade sprinkles at their freshest!

Ally’s DIY : How to make your own homemade sprinkles

  1. Assemble piping tips into piping bags and set to the side until ready to use. Line 1-2 cookie sheets with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. Make the mixture: Using my Royal Icing Recipe or the recipe listed below.
  3. Divide in bowls and cover with plastic wrap until you are ready to mix the colours. The number of bowls will depend on the number of colours you want to make.
  4. As you finish mixing each color you can transfer immediately into your piping bags or do it after all colours have been mixed – your choice.
  5. Pip long lines on parchment paper (or dots if you want to make round sprinkles). Let sit for 10-12 hours.
  6. Use a knife to cut your lines of icing into the length sprinkles you want to make.
  7. Mix colours together to create a mix or store indiviually.
  8. Use sprinkles as you would on cupcakes, in FUNfetti Cookies, on a cake or to decorate sugar cookies with!
  9. Eat your tasty treats and enjoy!
